About Liz Fichera website | Blog | Twitter | GoodreadsLiz is an American author living in the American Southwest by way of Chicago. Born and raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, after college, never expecting to live more than one year among cactus and people who’d never seen snow. She was wrong. It certainly didn't hurt that she met her future husband in Phoenix too.
Most of her stories are set in the American Southwest because she thinks the desert is a cool place. Living in Phoenix, she's surrounded by Native American culture and influences, not to mention intriguing Hohokam petroglyphs and centuries-old canals. There are over 20 tribes in Arizona and she's lucky to be neighbors to the Gila River and the Salt River Indian Communities.
When she's not busy writing her next novel, she likes to travel, visit museums, support local theater productions, hike, and pretend that she's training for a triathlon. She posts a lot of photos from her desert and mountain hikes on her Facebook and Twitter pages. In no particular order, she has been chased by javalinas, rattlesnakes, coyotes, and even one curious black bear. She would love to connect with you there too!
We are SUPER excited to be part of the HOOKED by Liz Fichera Kismet Blog tour. This is a fun contemporary book that deals with a lot of social issues but you don't feel like you're reading an "issue" book. Liz has done a great job of bringing us into the the world of Fred and Ryan and we hope you enjoy meeting them and learning a little more about them before you run out and buy HOOKED.
Be sure to stop by next week for our full review.
HOOKED out January 31st from Harlequin Teen: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Indiebound | Book Depository
Get hooked on a girl named Fred...
HE said: Fred Oday is a girl? Why is a girl taking my best friends spot on the boy's varsity golf team?
SHE said: Can I seriously do this? Can I join the boys' team? Everyone will hate me - especially Ryan Berenger.
HE said: Coach expects me to partner with Fred on the green? That is crazy bad. Fred's got to go - especially now that I can't get her out of my head. So not happening.
SHE said: Ryan can be nice, when he's not being a jerk. Like the time he carried my golf bag. But the girl from the rez and the spoiled rich boy from the suburbs? So not happening.
But there's no denying that things are happening as the girl with the killer swing takes on the boy with the killer smile...
Meet Fred Oday:
Hi, Page Turners. My name is Fred.
*The Page Turner friends narrow their eyes at their computer screens, do a silent head-shake*
Let me clarify. My name is Fred and I am a girl. I’m a junior at Lone Butte High School. My full name is Fredricka, but please don’t call me that. Ever. It makes me sound ancient.
You know the kind of girls in high school who are obsessed with their cell phones, make-up and clothes? They talk nonstop and live for drama? The kind of girls who’ve been sucking face with boys since the eighth grade and lost their virginity their freshman year? Yeah, that’s not me.
I travel a long way to get to my high school each day and live in the middle of the Sonoran Desert in a place south of Phoenix, Arizona, that I’d bet you’ve never heard of: the Gila River Indian Reservation. Ever seen pictures of Mars? That’s kind of what my Rez is like. But it’s my home and I love it except that I want more. Until recently, I’ve just had a hard time putting that want into words. Until recently, it didn’t have any shape or color.
Now all that’s changed.
Before I joined the Lone Butte High School golf team, no one had ever heard of me and, to be honest, I was fine with that. That’s because I’m quiet and shy but don’t mistake my stillness for weakness. It’s just that most people from my tribe are quiet, at least among strangers. We’re not comfortable with boasting either. So being the best player on the all boys’ golf team has been a major adjustment.
And that’s the world’s biggest understatement.
Meet Ryan Berenger:
Hi, Page Turners. My name is Ryan.
*Half the Page Turners swoon at their computer screens; the other half look at him with suspicion.*
*clears throat* Like, Fred, I’m a junior at Lone Butte and I’m on the golf team. Until Fred joined our team, I had the top spot. Now she’s got it and, seriously, she totally owns it. I’ve never seen a better swing.
You know the kind of guys in high school who get the sexiest girls, the new car at sixteen, drive their parents crazy, live to party, and who seem to get everything handed on a silver platter without a whole lot of effort? Yeah, that’s me.
*Hangs head in shame*
Well, correction.
That was me. I’m working on being better than that though I’m still a work in progress. So says my Dad.
But I have Fred to thank for metaphorically kicking my ass.
