Witchlanders Blog Tour

We are the first stop on the Witchlanders Tour stop! Click the banner above for all Kismet tour page!  We hope you enjoy learning a little bit more about Lena, Witchlanders and 2 of its characters!  And be on the look out for our review coming in September!

About Lena Coakley - website, facebook, twitter
Lena Coakley was born in Milford, Connecticut and grew up on Long Island. In high school, creative writing was the only class she ever failed (nothing was ever good enough to hand in!), but, undeterred, she went on to study writing at Sarah Lawrence College. She got interested in young adult literature when she moved to Toronto, Canada, and began working for CANSCAIP, the Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers, where she eventually became the Administrative Director. She is now a full-time writer living in Toronto. Witchlanders is her debut novel.

About Witchlanders - goodreads, amazon, B&N, Indie Bound
High in their mountain covens, red witches pray to the Goddess, protecting the Witchlands by throwing the bones and foretelling the future.
It’s all a fake.
At least, that’s what Ryder thinks. He doubts the witches really deserve their tithes—one quarter of all the crops his village can produce. And even if they can predict the future, what danger is there to foretell, now that his people’s old enemy, the Baen, has been defeated?
But when a terrifying new magic threatens both his village and the coven, Ryder must confront the beautiful and silent witch who holds all the secrets. Everything he’s ever believed about witches, the Baen, magic and about himself will change, when he discovers that the prophecies he’s always scorned—Are about him.

Falpian Caraxus Interviews Ryder

Falpian: I don’t know why anyone would want to interview Ryder. Trust me, I’ve been inside his head, there’s not much in there. Farming techniques. Things poor people know, like how to make soup for six out of a leather scabbard. I’m far more interesting.

Ryder: ***

Falpian: See? He doesn’t say anything. He just sits there and broods. He’s broody. Like a hen.

Ryder: ***

Falpian: Now he’s angry. Know how you tell? That scowl he always wears? It gets ever so slightly scowlier.

Ryder: Of all the people to be paired up with on an adventure, why did it have to be you?

Falpian: Don’t ask me. The Great God Kar must have a sense of humor.

Ryder: Goddess, if you don’t mind. You’re on my side of the border now. We worship the Goddess in the Witchlanders.

Falpian: Goddess! Can’t you people see that if the world were created by a woman, rivers would run uphill, animals would rule over humans, the sun would give off darkness instead of light…? It’s simple logic.

Ryder: Don’t let the witches hear you say that.

Falpian: Now you’re trying to scare me. They can’t hear us. Can they?

Ryder: Aren’t you supposed to be asking me questions?

Falpian: Fine, fine. What was it like to be raised by a witch? Did she cut off the hands of her victims and use them for prophecy bones?

Ryder: That’s my mother you’re talking about! You have some bizarre ideas about witches. My mother’s bones were passed down from generation to generation, and they were animal bones—not human. Anyway, she didn’t really believe in them. My mother wasn’t really a witch. She just threw the bones for money. She didn’t live in the mountain coven and study the teachings of Aata and Aayse or anything like that. She gave that up a long time ago.

What about you? What was it like growing up in a glittering palace and having a father who was a black magician? Did he teach you that weird singing magic you people do? Don’t know why you even call it singing, anyway. To me it sounds like metal scraping stone.

Falpian: It wasn’t exactly a glittering palace. Just a crumbling old stronghold by the sea. And my father… Let’s just say he was a little disappointed in me when he found out I wasn’t a singer, when he found out I didn’t have a talat-sa.

Ryder: What in the name of the Goddess is a talat-sa?

Falpian: My people believe that everyone in the world has a talat-sa, a twin in spirit. If you find him you can make a powerful magic together, but most people never find theirs. You’re supposed to dream each other’s dreams, hear each other’s thoughts…

Ryder: Hear each other’s thoughts? The way you and I do sometimes?

Falpian: No. That’s totally different. I couldn’t have a Witchlander like you as a talat-sa. It would be like having a talat-sa who was a…a goat.

Ryder: Well, don’t get all red in the face; I don’t want you as a “twin in spirit” either. The idea is ridiculous.

Falpian: Ridiculous.

Ryder: I have been having these weird dreams, though…

Falpian: Ridiculous!

Ryder: Right. Ridiculous.

Thanks Falpain & Ryder for joining us today!!!

  1. Haha, very funny interview! Just from this post today I'm probably more interested in Falpian because I found his comments to be so humourous and witty! Those types of characters tend to appeal to be more, at first.

Thanks for sharing your post on this tour stop! :)

  4. Ryder! I loved him in the book. He has a quiet strength and I really liked his relationship with his mother and sisters. I think there's a lot more to him than meets the eye and I feel like we've only scratched the surface.

  6. Great interview! These two were never so funny in the book. I more intrigued by Falpain right now since we still don't know too much about him so I can't wait for the next book.

  7. I'm about 40 pages from finishing this riveting novel. I'd have to say the most intriguing character for me was Ryder. He's brave, solid, knows what he wants and isn't afraid to blaze his own path. He's kind and caring and shows a lot of love for his sisters and his mother. I think what I like the most is he thinks for himself and doesn't just blindly follow people.

  8. Definitely more intrigued by Ryder. Anyone who worships the Goddess and can make "soup for six out of a leather scabbard" has my heart.
I'm so looking forward to reading Witchlanders!

  9. Have to be honest Falpian would be the most intriguing to me, sort of reminds me of my hubby at times - same sort of dry humour

  10. Falpian does display a more interesting sense of humour but a witch's son, well, still waters have to run a lot deeper than just this dialogue. It's Ryder all the way. Send notification of where to pick up my Kindle to:

  12. Ryder! Any guy who can farm, cook and is the son of a witch had got to have something going for him. I'm quite certain he and Falpian will have some interesting moments!

  13. Hands down Ryder! I respect a person who has come from nothing and becomes something. Plus, that's how you know more of the world that way - to see things from the lowest point and then work your way up but still able to keep your humbleness as well as manners & respect.. AND, I really don't get a person who would use the word scowlier lol it's funny but it's a lil bratty =)
