Title: The Mark
Author: Jen Nadol
Rating:

Synopsis: Cassandra Renfield has always seen the mark—a glow around certain people reminiscent of candlelight. But the one time she mentioned it, it was dismissed as a trick of the light. Until the day she watches a man awash in the mark die. After searching her memories, Cassie realizes she can see a person’s imminent death. Not how or where, only when: today.
Armed with a vague understanding of the light, Cassie begins to explore her “gift,” seeking those marked for death and probing the line between decision and destiny. Though she’s careful to hide her secret—even from her new philosophy-obsessed boyfriend—with each impending death comes the temptation to test fate. But so many questions remain. How does the mark work? Why is she the only one who sees it? And finally, the most important of all: If you know today is someone’s last, should you tell them? (from BN.com)

The Mark is an enjoyable thought provoking read. Jen does a great job posing the question, should you and would you tell them if you knew they were about to die? 16 year old Cassie is a girl who is thrown into the deep end being an adult early on in the book. We see her struggle with the new found freedom and make some poor judgment calls.
These choices impacted the overall experience Pixie and I had reading the book. One choice left us both a little taken aback and is why were are suggesting this book for older YA readers only. Jen does a great job of creating Cassie's world and helping understand the mark and the choices Cassie has to make because she has this "gift." We cant wait to get back into Cassie's world as Jen says in her interview, she has a 2nd book done that's looking for a home. It will be interesting to see if the choices Cassie made over this one summer will have an impact on her future beyond the history of and the lessons learned in regards to her gift.

Thanks for the review!
Interesting review. I like that you've suggested it for older YA readers, that's very helpful.
I love the question posed in this book. I'm not sure what I'd do if given the option of telling people they were about to die; I want to say I'd keep it to myself, but then part of me really wants them to have the best last day ever. Of course, who could have a good day if some random girl told them were going to die? Oh well, I really want to see what she does! This sounds so good!
I've been looking forward to this book and you're review has made it even more interesting! I appreciate that you suggest it for older readers too. I agree that it poses a great question and I'm curious to see how the author handles it throughout the series.
Omg. I can't wait to read the book :) Sounds really interesting
